• The war on weed in Mexico is winding down after various supreme court decisions decreed the right to cultivate and deemed unconstitutional the ban on recreational use. Cannabis growers feel confident in going mainstream and some have already switched from growing crops, noting that a gram of MJ can be sold for several kilos of black beans. “This is another revolution,” says grower Isidro Cisneros, adding “Growing cannabis, peasants can live and eat well.” Mexico's president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, has indicated his support for legalization but has been criticized for dragging his feet. Campaigns allege that opposition from the armed forces is holding things up and in November, hacked documents revealed links between elected officials and drug cartels. With or without the government figures, the domestic industry is growing and communities all over want their share of the pie. It is estimated that more than 10 million people in Mexico have used cannabis, making the legal market worth more than $3 billion. |
